Martin's Bank, Staveley
First chance to take a clear shot of this intriguing building in Staveley on Main Street. I then had to Google it to find out more!
There is a whole website dedicated to the history of this bank company and they have a page dedicated to Staveley giving a little history:
Pre 1893 - Messrs Wakefield Crewdson - The Kendal Bank
1893 - Bank of Liverpool
1918 - Bank of Liverpool and Martins Limited
1928 - Martins Bank Limited
15 December 1969 - Barclays Bank Limited 20-45-28 Kendal
26 June 1993 - Closed
I love the fact that was basically a bank in the front room of a cottage open only 2 days a week! Back then travelling to Kendal was time consuming so it made sense to have a local little bank to put their takings in. Such a shame its no longer profitable to have a bank in the village - though the Post Office provides some banking services.
