There is a light that never goes out

This brace of street lights stands next to a Pétanque course, which suddenly appeared in the town centre a few months ago. Nowt wrong with that, I guess, especially given that the area it stands on was a just an expanse of tarmac before then. But still, we're not in the sarf of Frarnce 'n that...quite the reverse actually. This being a local authority matter, there is a sign nearby bristling with 'elf n safety warnings...
...Today I had occasion to phone California. I spoke to a fine gentleman at Apple Inc...a thoroughly nice chap, but he did have a Californian accent you could stand a spoon in. Some of you may feel inclined to point out that I am in fact Californian myself. This is quite true, but I try to keep the word 'awesome' to a minimum....
