Nendrum Monastic Site

We visited Nendrum Monastery this morning ,which is situated at Mahee Island on the shores of Strangford Lough. It is thought that the Monastery dates back to the fifth century, but the records are uncertain. However, it is regarded as a good example of a pre Norman site.. A Benedictine community lived here from 1178 and there is an excavated tide mill in the outer enclosure.. I so love the tranquil atmosphere of the area and we enjoyed the views over the Lough.. It was a beautiful sunny day, but extremely chilly!
