Timelessness

Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.
Frank Gehry

I must admit, I never really thought much about architecture until about twenty years ago. Of course, I saw the beauty of a building - particularly edifices that had stood the test of time, but gave little consideration to the actual art of architecture, and the wonder of contemporary design.

Tours of European cities with sons who were leaning towards careers in arts and design changed all that, and with one son and a daughter-in-law (married to a different son) both architects, my passion and interest has continued to grow.

So for today’s challenge, I’m keen to focus on Llandudno’s Mostyn Gallery. Like much of the town, it’s housed within the grandeur of Victorian or Edwardian design - elaborate facades reaching proudly for three storeys or more, each building individually designed yet terraced to make one harmonious whole. Much of this grandeur relies on the Mostyn family, and particularly Lady Augusta Mostyn who actually commissioned the gallery for a women’s art society. More details of the building’s history are in the link below.

The current space dates back to 2007 when Ellis Williams Architects restored the façade, canopy and original exhibition galleries. It’s a wonderful space, and I love the way the exterior gives no hint of the design statements within, particularly the focus of this Blip - a board imprinted concrete circulation lightwell which brings natural daylight to the gallery’s formerly dark rear spaces.

There’s so much about this place that juxtaposes the traditional and contemporary, and I’ve tried to capture that in my collage (see extras).

Thanks to bobsblips for hosting Wide Wednesday..
