Wide Wales
Today is a 4 layer day, damp and drizzling, but fortunately we are 4 layer prepared!
Cardigan first, (the place, not the layer!) it’s a pretty place where we visit the castle, dating back to the12th century, there’s a wooden sculpture of Lord Rhys completed this spring and made from an ancient oak, felled due to fungal disease. Lord Rhys - founder of the Welsh Eisteddfod - it seems a good way to honour both. I’m surprised to discover that Cardigan Castle was not restored til after 2003.
We have lunch at Mwnt on the recommendation of a school friend (50 years this year!) - it’s her favourite place in the world, and it is a beautiful beach, we follow the coastal path until we can see Cardigan Island, - the stonechats are out en mass - I’ve never seen one before this week - and then we climb Y Foel y Mwnt where the blip is taken. It’s here we see another mysterious beetle.
We visit the gardens at Dyffryn Fernant, which are utterly delightful, the layout, the casual beauty - and the birds. Mr and Mrs Sisken, and Mr Chaffinch, amongst others pose nicely. Most of the montage photos are taken here. Coffee and Bara Brith sustain us.
Although I haven’t had an ancient history fix today, intuitively I see the ancient here in the ‘magic garden’ where there is an overgrown mound - I’d love to be part of that reveal.
Fish and chips tonight, we have them down at the harbour watching the tide coming in and 2 herring gulls fight over seaweed.
Fires on now, hunkering down for the night - West Wales has so so much to offer
