Incredibly ugly front-yard art
I don’t know how I missed this on all my previous walks through Berkeley. It’s in front of a rather large (= expensive) house set high on a hillside. To my eye, it looks like a blow-up of a child’s cheap plastic toy. It’s probably made of lacquered wood, though it could also be glazed ceramic; because of its distance from the street, I couldn’t get close enough to be sure.
Perhaps the choice of animal can be explained by the fact that the bear is the symbol of both the state of California and the University of California, Berkeley. Explanation, yes, but not justification, since nothing can justify such a severe lapse in taste.
