An Historic Day Out

Weekly trip to Sedbergh to take out A. On the way to walk around the Lowgill Viaduct ( Grade 2 listed, 1859) and the Crook of Lune Bridge (Grade 2 listed 16C  - extra) we passed this old Grade 2 listed milestone. KL is Kirkby Lonsdale but what is BB.  Heritage England say it is Borrow Bridge.  About 5 miles up the road is or rather was a Roman Fort  ( Low Borrowbridge)  But looking at the old maps on National Library of Scotland website where you can overlay the new maps on the old maps I can see the old road went over a bridge over the Borrow Beck which meets the Lune nearby.  This must be the Borrow Bridge of the old mile stone.  The old Borrow Bridge  still exists but goes to a farm and is a cul de sac because of the M6 and there is a new bridge over Borrow Beck.  I'll have a closer look next time  I go up the A6. 
And after all that excitement we had lunch on Master Knott, site of "Fox's Pulpit" where there is a memorial stone to George Fox who preached there to thousands on 13 June 1652 and started  the Quaker movement, Gosh what a lot of history.
