Stab in the back
This weathered brooch belonged to my paternal grandmother and the V probably stands for Victory or for Vrijheid (freedom) in Dutch. This week in May the Dutch commemorate those who died in WWII and other wars and celebrate being freed after 5 years of occupation by the Nazi regime 76 years ago. Tomorrow, 4 May, is the Dutch Remembrance Day and on the 5th of May we celebrate Liberation Day. Obviously with the passing of time now that there are not many people left who consciously experienced the war, the occupation and the liberation it is harder to keep the memories alive but it is our civil duty to not forget the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom.
One of the Dutch political parties, a right-wing libertarian one with xenophobic undertones, has been against Covid-19 restrictions, works together with other anti-Covid-19 restrictions groups including conspiracy fans, and has felt it necessary to publish a poster saying that on May 5 they are celebrating 75 years of freedom, as freedom has 'died' in 2020. This provocation is worse than 'taking a cheap shot' I think, it's a stab in the back for all those who suffered in WWII and for all those who fought for our freedom. How anyone can think that the necessary measures to contain the virus have anything to do with the horrors of war, occupation and suppression by another nation is baffling and thoroughly disgusting, in my opinion.
For today's Mono Monday theme of 'cheap shot' with thanks to laurie54 for hosting MonoMonday in May
Thanks very much for the kind comments, stars and even a heart for yesterday's orange and last week's Abstract Thursday results.
