Mantlepiece Still Life
If my photos of the tulip or the flicker had turned out, things here might look different. Instead, an impromptu view of the mantle with the birthday highlights removed. Funny how things end up lying around our house. The sunflower was actually part of our wedding decorations from over twenty years ago. There must be some reason we have those specific rocks, but I can't remember at the moment. The owl was a card from my mother, who has likely heard me recreate the call of the saw whet owl more than once. It's due back any day now, and has a sneaky way of blending into the background silence when it does return. You suddenly realize that ringing in your ears is an owl in the woods behind the house. Cute fellows, but you don't really want them nesting too close I'm afraid. Their call is described as "an insistent series of whistled notes on roughly the same pitch, given at a rate of about 2 notes per second." Which bears repeating really:
"an insistent series of whistled notes on roughly the same pitch, given at a rate of about 2 notes per second."
It's so obnoxious that I kind've love it. For the first week anyhow. Please do check it out.
