Crash Site of USAAF B17 Flying Fortress

During a walk we came across this memorial. It is a few miles SW of Rattlesden Airfield: the plane crashed shortly after takeoff and all crew were killed. Their names and the story are shown in my extra photos.

447th Bomb Group were based at Rattlesden from November 1943. They undertook 256 missions and suffered 97 combat losses and 43 due to accidents (such as this one). The airfield is now home to a local Gliding Club
