Celilo

Native American fishing shacks, now behind the Shilo Inn at The Dalles. 56 years ago, March 10, 1957, The Dalles Dam (structure behind these shacks) shut forever the waters of The Columbia, drowning the fishing grounds held sacred for over 11,000 years by the tribes of the Northwest. When the dam gates were closed that day, it took four hours for Celilo Falls, a great horseshoe-shaped falls and the main fishing hub 13 miles upstream from these shacks, to disappear. As many as 10,000 people watched the falls, and a way of life, vanish that day.
