Into focus: "to a certain extent"

The results of the elections - those that have been established so far - were as predicted and yet the press still managed to present the Hartlepool result as a surprise, although I'll grant you that Labour did even worse than expected.

Brexit is not over and won't be for a long time to come, and while that goes a long way to explaining the result, it also beggars the question as to why Labour decided to stand a Remainer as their candidate.

But, actually, the most interesting thing I read all day was a comment made by Boris Johnson: "What has happened is that they can see we did get Brexit done and, to a certain extent, they can see we delivered on that."

He won't keep the pretence that everything is going according to plan for much longer. (Not least because there never was a plan.)
