Lathyrus Odoratus

White is the new purple

This morning the spaniel and I walked the woodland butterfly transect. It was drizzling so I was concentrating on the orchids rather than looking for butterflies. I came across this unusual pair of almost pure white Early-purple Orchids. Their tall spindly form is typical of orchids growing in dense woodland and they had unspotted leaves. In Sussex the common name for the Early-purple orchid is Rams-horns, probably a reference to the shapes formed by  the leaf rosette.
