Ship crosses road
This cargo vessel has arrived on the flowing tide and is being slowly and cautiously manoeuvred along the narrow channel which normally allows road traffic across via a swing bridge. The bridge has swivelled through 90 degrees and the ship is coming through.
The Bentinck Dock is to the right and the Alexandra Dock to the left. The map in satellite view will orientate you better than words. Looking down on the scene the bridge rotates anticlockwise to occupy the ground on my side of the channel.
The photo is a bit deceptive making it look as if the ship is elevated. The water level is two or three meters below the road and the hull of the ship extends well below the water line. You can see the nearer edge of the bridge, obscured is the road and the further edge, then the exposed channel along which the vessel is passing. You can just see queuing traffic on the other side.
I think the vessel has come to collect scrap metal which might come back sometime as white goods or cars I suppose.
