Oregano flowers
Truth be told, I didn't really know whether or not oregano plants produced flowers. It was definitely a possibility, but I couldn't swear I'd ever spotted one. Until I came across this lot in the herb garden.
I don't feel too bad about my horticultural ignorance, because the things are so crazy-small that it's very easy not to notice them, even when you're right next to them.
A rough measurement with a rusty tape measure puts the flowers at about 3mm x 5mm.
And it's not like they're swaying in the breeze showing off their very brightly coloured flowers. A very pale, off-white pink is the brightest they can muster.
Despite their diminutive stature, once you get close enough to get a good look at them, they're very attractive flowers in their own right. Fine, delicate petals with some subtle striations, and two or three elegant knob-tipped stamens arcing out from the centre.
Oregano grows very easily with minimal care and attention, smells so delicious, and tastes delightful when included fresh in all sorts of meals - especially pastas, pizzas and salads.
So it's a herb that I already hold in high regard.
Having gorgeous little flowers on top of all that is a delightful bonus.
Cheers to you, Oregano
