Camera stills and videos of the deep-sea are typically obtained by use of free fall landers. On this cruise two landers (one of Alan's and one of Thom's) will be deployed. One of the landers will also feature amphipod traps for me and Niki.

The free fall landers are deployed from the boat with a series of buoys and sink to the sea floor. Landers will begin their assent again once their acoustic releases have been activated by a remote signal which causes them to drop their weights and float back to the surface with the help of the buoys. One of the buoys also has an orange flag attached to it which is used for spotting when the device has reached the surface.
