The Shepherd's Caravan...
... was a 19th and early 20th century mobile hut, used by a shepherd during lambing. He would stay out on the hillside with his flock, living in his caravan for weeks or months on end. This is a typical example with iron wheels and corrugated iron top and sides. It was a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, sitting room and storeroom all rolled into one. It's badly dilapidated now, but has a stove in one corner for warmth and cooking, and a hinged stable door, which was always positioned away from the prevailing wind (that would be essential with the icy wind today!). The strong axles with cast iron wheels were used to withstand constant movement from field to field.
It's not been used since we came here almost 20 years ago. We sometimes think about having it done up as a garden room...
