Stations and Stamps
This morning I was out in the dreary weather, posting a letter and doing a little shopping. As you can read in Jan's blip, it was... A very, very, deeply dull day but part of my shopping was these rather lovely stamps, for letters (brev) sent inside Sweden (Sverige). I decided stamps made a better blip than a picture of mist!
The stamps show some of the classic Swedish railway stations, mostly built in the second half of the 1800's. It was a time when the state believed its buildings should be impressive, beautiful, and built to last. The buildings are all pictured in winter, which is rather lovely to see.
From top to bottom the stations are...
Haparanda, on the border with Finland at the top of the Baltic. On one side of the platform the rails are of the European gauge, while on the other side the rails are broader, as used in Finland and Russia.
Järle is Sweden's oldest (still in use) station.
Alvesta is a node where several railways meet.
Åsarna is on the "Inland Railway" running north-south through the center of Sweden.
Jörn is considered by many to be Sweden's most beautiful station.
PS This is yesterday's picture - a backblip.
