Lathyrus Odoratus

Two's company three's a crowd

Absolutely fabulous day on the Sussex/Surrey border looking for Wood Whites (Leptidea sinapis). The males emerge a couple of weeks before the females and it seems that the females had just emerged causing great excitement. I was filming the famous courtship dance of this couple (they are perched on Bitter vetch) when a second male tried to join in. During the display the male stands opposite the female and waves his head and antennae back and forth with his proboscis extended.

In total I counted more than sixty of one of the UK's rarest and most threatened species.  Its estimated that the woods I was in contain a quarter of the entire UK population of this charismatic butterfly.
