Shelter from the storm*
Trying as ever to protect my tiny Brassica plants from the weather (cold and windy) and the other hazards they face: slugs and snails chiefly, followed by cabbage root fly and caterpillars when' (if) they survive this initial stage. Not to mention sprawling cats and rampaging dog.
My childhood was punctuated by my father's imprecations against all the above, as well as rabbits, pigeons and insurgent sheep. Yet his vegetables supplied our table most of the year, as indeed we are still eating my last year's broccoli and chard.
Gardeners are the ultimate re-users and re-purposers. Here I have created collars out of plastic pots with the bottoms cut out, with inverted yoghourt pots and half bottles tucked in as individual plant protectors. In all likelihood the wind will spin them all away.
