How the Pakaha were identified

On 05 April I noticed the water in Kawau Bay shimmering. It seemed strange and I couldn't see why. I looked through the lens of my Pentax, and saw that the shimmering was from birds flying south just a few feet above the surface of the water. But to identify them as the Fluttering shearwater (known to Maori as Pakaha i got out the telescope which has lain unused for a couple of years. At the bottom of the wardrobe. Now set up and waiting to be used again.
