Drochil Castle in the snow

We managed to get out of our lane by following a snowplough and made our way to Peebles. On the return journey I noticed the great view of Drochil Castle, which in the summer is obscured by trees in leaf. This Historic Monument is not open to the public and is apparently in a dangerous condition. It dates back to the 16th Century (building work started in 1578) when James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, Regent of Scotland initiated the build. It was to be not just a castle but also a palace. Sadly the Earl was executed three years after he started the castle, by King James VI (of Scotland) and the castle was never finished completely. To get to the building you need to use a private driveway which I am too chicken to do so this impressive view was taken from the public road. I'm quite pleased to finally manage a good picture.
More snow pictures from today can be seen on my blog post here.
