When The Sky's The Limit

Today's image was taken on a micro trip to Kings Hill - a garden village just outside West Malling.
The full title of this sculpture is "When The Sky's The Limit The Spirit Soars" and commemorates the life and achievements of the founder of the company that created the village.
The building in the background is The Spitfire pub which is reference to the fact that the village is built on the site of what was RAF West Malling - an airfield that was home to a squadron of spitfires during Word War Two - and played a significant part in the Battle of Britain.
It closed as an operational base in the 60's but continued with civilian flights throughout the 70's and 80's and even had it's own annual airshow called the Great Warbird Air Display. I remember attending once back in the 80's and my eardrums nearly being perforated by the deafening flypast of a Vulcan bomber.
The extra is called "Conservation Conversation". I had originally intended to take a shot of the old airfield control tower (which is now a coffee shop) but when I got there it was covered in scaffolding and plastic sheeting undergoing building work. This conservation area (the images on the wall are some of the plants they are trying to encourage to grow on the site) sits opposite the control tower and it was great to see people sitting outside chatting away in the warm spring sunshine - the weather has finally turned at last. Hurrah!
