A walk north of the Wall
I met up today with Brian, Jean, Tony and Marie for a seven mile walk north of Hadrian's Wall. We all like this rugged area. Whilst many walkers are enjoying Hadrian's Wall Trail, we escaped to an area where we rarely see anyone else. (We saw one other walker in the distance today.)
We walked north across moorland and farmland until we reached Simonburn, now a hamlet. It featured in several films of Catherine Cookson's books and has a medieval church, St. Mungo's.
Then it was back uphill. Between Uppertown and Tecketts Farms the footpath was challenging. This included a fallen bird cherry tree which blocked a narrow path. We managed to climb through with great difficulty.
My blip was taken during the coffee break. We were beside a large wet area covered in marsh marigolds. The wildflowers everywhere were a sight for sore eyes.
It was sunny and hot. We did not push ourselves and had a brilliant day out.
(Meanwhile on the east coast there was a heavy sea fret all day. Ouch.)
