Stirling’s War

Today’s walk was led by my friend Tim and told the story of a Robert Stirling’s War.
A couple of years ago Tim was given a document by a local lady on one of his gun battery tours. The document was notes her father had made about a British airman who had bailed out of his plane during the war. Before he ran short of fuel he had compass problems so had no idea where he was. When he saw land he thought it was the Isle of Wight but it was actually Lihou Island, a tiny island off the coast of Guernsey and accessible across a causeway at certain low tides. He landed at midnight and managed to make his way across the causeway to Guernsey, walked through a minefield and on to the nearest house where the owners shielded him until morning. In the morning the owners went to a neighbor’s house to use their phone and report his presence to the Police, who turned up with German Officers soon after and arrested him. He spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp.
A lovely story because nobody was killed or even injured.
Tim wrote about this story and it was picked up by the local newspaper and eventually the mainland media.
