More Flowers
I guess I've just been noticing a lot of flowers lately. I suppose it's that time of year. It's a good thing they sort of jump out at you, since I've been having a difficult time thinking about taking pictures or reading poetry the last few days. I was walking into a market after work to grab something to eat on the way home and bam! Bright flowers demanding my attention! So I snapped a couple of photos and moved on. I asked my wife what they were and she gave me some precise name that I couldn't believe the average person would ever have heard of. C'mon! I told her I wanted the name people like me who didn't work at a flower shop might call them. Petunias? No. Apparently some people know these as "million bells." Ok, that of course calls to mind a poem right away:
...to the swinging and the ringing
of the bells, bells, bells,
of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
bells, bells, bells --
To the rhyming and the chiming of the bells!
from The Bells, by Edgar Allan Poe
Which, if you ask me, is a very silly poem, and in my mind must always be read out loud in an increasingly frantic and overly-dramatic way that makes your listener get a bit worried that you've actually gone off the deep end.
