Wreck of the SS Minmi

Today, in spite of a forecast of inclement weather, my bushwalking group did a round trip from La Perouse including Cape Banks. My photo is of the wreck of the collier SS Minmi. At 10pm on 8 May 1937, on its way from Melbourne to Newcastle in heavy seas and dense fog, the ship struck Cape Banks, after which the ship's cook collapsed and died of a heart attack. At 12.45am the ship split in two with crew members in each section. The rescue of those in the front section was easy enough but those in the back section had to wait until daylight. One crew member died in this complicated rescue effort.

I'd like to have photographed the wreck from a few more angles but the tide was coming in. Better not to tempt fate.

In respect of our walk, the rain became heavier as the morning wore on. It was good to be rewarded with a lunch of grilled flathead at the Boat Shed, then get home, change into dry clothes and snuggle up in bed with Smokey.

Thanks for hosting Marlieske. Stay well all.
