The small rocky island Siilinkari

Siilinkari on the lake Näsijärvi is the most popular walking destination in winter. It´s only about one kilometer from the nearest shore.

It has also very tragically history:
The steam ship Kuru sank on 7 september 1929 near Siilinkari. The capsizing was mostly due to an overly-high center of gravity. In 1927 a third deck level had been added without expert help. The big waves brought water onto the deck and the water couldn´t flow away. It was exceptionnally hard storm, over 11 beauforts.
This maritime disaster led to the loss of 136 lives. There were 150 passengers and 12 crew members.
