Yellowhammer
I went for a walk on Old Oswestry Hillfort this morning. I was really pleased to see this beautiful yellowhammer singing to another one close by. Their song is "A little bit of bread and no cheeeese". They're now red in the conservation list due to habitat loss as they're farmland birds and farming has changed radically over the years.
The hillfort was an Iron Age settlement and a flock of Soay/Hebridean sheep have been brought in to graze the bracken on it's steep sides. These were chosen as this mixture is thought to be the closest to Iron Age sheep.
There are signs everywhere asking people to keep dogs on leads in the (fenced off) areas where the sheep are. Today there was a notice saying that 4 sheep had been killed over the past week due to dogs running free. I despair of some people!! One of these handsome sheep is an extra, I love his horns.
Afterwards I called at F's house. He's doing major alterations (himself) changing a small kitchen and breakfast room into one kitchen/diner and putting in an inside wc as well as changing the window and putting in patio doors.
So far he has made a new window and frame himself and taken out the old one. I took a photo of him cleaning the bricks before the new window goes in.
