Three headlands
This is an evening view from Rocky Point, just south of Lennox Head. The three headlands are, from the left, Lennox Head, Broken Head and Cape Byron.
Lennox Head was named in 1828 by Captain Henry Rous, in command of the Royal Navy survey ship Rainbow. It was named after his friend Charles, Duke of Lennox and Richmond.
The name Broken Head was in use by the late 1800s, but I've not been able to find its origin. The area is a significant site for the Bandjalung people and is protected as a nature reserve.
Cape Byron was named by Captain James Cook on 15 May 1770. It was named after Captain (later Vice Admiral) John Byron RN, who was the grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.
