I went to drink gin in Dan and Joey’s garden. On the way I passed the futuristic Schlumberger Cambridge Research site and then stopped at Sainsbury’s for provisions.

Steps to follow for ego-boosting, for those trying not to slide into middle age.

1. Dress like a youth in casual shorts and a t-shirt with the logo of a well-known sports brand
2. Have fairly unkempt hair
3. Wear mask
4. Use self-service checkout to process an alcohol purchase
5. Attendant will be called to verify whether purchaser is ‘visibly over 25’
6. Act nonchalant and hope that it’s not an instantaneous ‘yes’
