Is it a Moth: is it a Butterfly?

I have been unable to identify this creature (which infiltrated our conservatory today) from my limited resources.

I couldn't resist inserting the extra photo which is a bit cheeky as it's not actually a photo, rather a screenshot from a plane identification app. Air Force One, the US Presidential plane flew over our village in the evening: shot shows it almost on the ground at RAF Mildenhall. (I was too slow with my camera, which was a shame as we had a lovely clear blue sky!) He's en route to the G7 conference due in a few days time in Cornwall.
