Watch Out Below
You have to look closely to see this hawk (juvenile Red-shouldered I think) surveying the yard. I was eating breakfast when I caught the movement of her landing on a branch with a perfect view of the open lawn, near the bird feeder. This was taken through the window, at quite a distance, so I was lucky to get it at all. I couldn't stay long enough to see if there is now one less dove or chipmunk down below.
(As I look at the photo now, I can spot 6 cicadas on the branches. Brood X is finishing its mating ritual and starting to die out. I've gotten used to the constant whirring sound they make. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that they won't return for 17 years.)
