Alston

Here we have  Alston Market Cross. Alston the highest market town in England at 300m.  The market cross here dates from 1774 but has been rebuilt a few times after being hit by wagons. 
We came for a very enjoyable orienteering event which led us round the streets and alleys and parks. A good opportunity to explore the lovely old town and the heritage South Tynedale Railway at Alston station.  The latter has a good café if you are visiting
