Urangan Pier, Hervey Bay
This is the Pier we walked along yesterday and I had intended to blip it today. Coincidentially, when I read the local paper this morning there was an article about it. It stated that the "iconic Urangan Pier will undergo a $5million upgrade to replace 660 mtrs of wooden piles". It also stated that in 2009, $2.5 million was spent refurbishing the end 220 mtrs of the pier's piles.
It was opened in 1917 to export coal, timber and sugar from the Wide Bay hinterland. The old timber poles will be salvaged by the council and used in projects around the region. A temporary walkway will be built off the side of the pier to allow people to pass the construction area.
We had another lovely day - it seems so long since we had such a relaxing holiday. We drove up to Burrum Heads to have a look around - it's just a very small fishing village which was still showing signs of the remants of Cyclone Oswald that passed through earlier this year. We had a massive lunch, which I couldn't finish, at the local tavern and then headed back to the bay and did nothing until five when we headed out for a beautiful walk around the Marina and all the little restaurants and bars that line the waterfront. Then back home for a nice white (or two) and a very light meal.
