Evolution of Darwin
Had to go into Lichfield to get car MOT'd, so had a great day together while waiting. One thing we did was go round the home of Erasmus Darwin, THE Darwin's grandfather. As the lady at reception said, "a much greater man", in every sense of the word.
Over 6 feet tall and immensely fat - and ugly - he still managed to have two happy marriages, plus two illegitimate daughters with the nurse who came to look after his kids when his first wife died. And he won his second wife, even though much younger and handsomer suitors were after her - with whom he had another brood of children.
As well as being a hugely successful doctor to the rich and poor alike (George III invited him to be his physician, an offer he declined because didn't want to leave Lichfield), he was a leading poet, inventor (we still use the device he used to make steering vehicles safer) and scientist - he had already come to the conclusion that some form of evolution must happen before Charles was even born.
My question is - HOW did he have the time for all this???
