The Edge of the Wold

Ingleborough

From my vantage point on Arnside Knott this morning, the sun rose directly behind the flat top of Ingleborough. This was half an hour or so later as we headed back towards home, the clouds had gathered in what had been an almost clear sky. I knew from the weather forecast that I would need to be early today, the clouds became a dense blanket as the day went on, and drizzle turned into rain. It won't be long, even allowing for the clocks changing, before sunrise will be too early to get up for.

This was the alternative blip today, a song thrush shining from a prominent perch in a dead tree on top of the Knott. He was framed against the faint outline of the Old Man of Coniston. Somewhere deeper and safer in cover there was also a blackbird singing his mellower, flutey song.
