Sargent Mtn. Summit

Rolled out of bed at 4:30 this morning and headed right out to beat the crowds and the heat. The hike up the East Face of Sargent Mtn. was unfortunately much more strenuous than it used to be, but I made it and had the whole top of the mountain to myself. There were great views to the north. Not entirely sure that's Katahdin out there but it sure looks like it.  Here's Marsden's painting as a reference -- looks pretty similar hey? Seeing as that's over 100 miles away I always doubt it's what I'm actually looking at. By the time I got to Sargent Mtn. Pond there was an amazing and hilarious call and response of frogs going on, with hundreds of dragonflies zooming around and tons of whirligig beetles spinning around on the surface. Very rewarding. Also had a delightful look at a peregrine flying around the scree slope below the Jordan Cliffs. Only found out afterwards that section of the carriage roads was closed and I wasn't supposed to be there...whoops.

In the evening I braved the marauding mosquitos and went across the way to cut some maple for this year's yule log. I guess it's all downhill from here!
