Field guide comes in handy

My friend Laurey is from Alaska and they don't have many snakes up there. She really jumped today when I grabbed her as she was about to step on this snake on the trail. I told her I thought the snake was quite benign -- no rattlers on its tail. We pulled out the hand field guide and found it was a gopher snake and harmless.
