Broughton House Kirkcudbright

Edward Atkinson Hornel was one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’ group of artists. In the 1890s he spent 19 months in Japan, a country newly opened to the world, and painted a series of work for an 1895 exhibition in Glasgow on his return. The exhibition was a great success and the proceeds enabled him to buy Broughton House, the grandest house in his home town of Kirkcudbright, in 1901!

The house is full of books, art works (Hornel, Oppenheimer, George Henry & a memorable Bessie MacNicol) and period furniture and it has the studio where Hornel worked.

The Japanese inspired garden behind the house was laid out by Hornel and his sister. A fantastic achievement and a pleasure to walk around.
