Extraordinary day at Wimbledon
It’s wonderful to see Wimbledon back on our TV and the first day was extraordinary for several reasons.
There were crowds, and hardly a mask to be seen (extra). A contrast with Australia where several states are now in lockdown.
Today was special too because you only see the famous grass courts in such perfect condition as this for one day, the opening day of the tournament. By day two they will be showing the first signs of wear.
19 year old English wild card Jack Draper must have been shocked to discover that his round one match would be on Centre Court, against the world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic. Unfazed, he played with great flair and took the first set before Djokovic asserted his authority.
The commentator for this match was Andrew Cotter. The owner of two ‘very good dogs’, Olive and Mabel, Andrew was an overnight social media sensation when he made a series of hilarious videos applying his commentator’s style to Olive and Mabel's exploits. http://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2822320761379752846
He sounds exactly the same commentating on Wimbledon, which is a tad disconcerting. I quite expected the two good dogs to appear on screen and steal the show from Djokovic and Draper.
