When One Door Opens
After a three year wait, it finally looks as if the final stage of the work we had planned inside the house is about to start. The wiring was completed before lockdown as was most of the plumbing. Unfortunately, there was a very small leak in the heating, which was only fixed after lockdown one ended. But finding a joiner proved a long job as everyone has wanted work doing over the last fifteen months. Finally though, all the stars have aligned. No more lockdowns. Joiner ready to start. And new doors not only ordered, but delivered! Needless to say, what we have ended up choosing is nothing like what we had in mind when we first started planning these improvements nearly three years ago. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think we would have been happy with our original choices and the delay meant we could make more considered decisions. A knock on from this is that we are now regretting the finish we chose for sockets and light switches - D’oh! So there will be more electrical work required, but pretty much all cosmetic. Another costly mistake was the settee. Ordered at the start of 2019, because we naively believed the work would all be done by that summer, we have lived with it for two years and it has turned out to be nowhere near as comfortable as it seemed in the showroom. So, whilst we have actually saved money by not replacing door casings and skirtings, we will have extra expense for replacement sockets and furniture. But there is no point in “putting up” with something just because we paid a lot of money for it. Accept it was a mistake, draw a line and move on is our new philosophy - I think the last year or so has taught us that life is for living as best you can, as you never know what might be round the corner.
And, just to clarify, the new doors are at the back of the shot. The white doors are the old ones which I have taken off tonight as a friend has asked if she can have them. Though I have left the bathroom door in place for now, to allow for a little privacy when getting up tomorrow morning!
