Orokonui Ecosanctuary
Today was what the weekend away was all about - to visit this Bird and bush sanctuary. A pest proof fence was put around it in 2007 and is 8.7km long.
We were there when it opened at 9.30am, and off on the different tracks we went to see the native birds. There were a couple of areas where there were feeding stations.
I was lucky enough at the first station to see a South Islan Kaka. There were numerous bellbirds, and also saw tomtit, fantail, tui and other birds in the bush. The bird song was glorious, and that was probably the best bit. Photographing the birds was difficult, as mostly they were up in the trees.
This is a Bellbird singing his heart out or perhaps calling to his mate who you can see on the branch behind.
We also saw an Easter Orchid - something I had not seen before.
Tonight we are returning to the Sanctuary to be taken on a night tour, where we will sit and listen for noises, and see Kiwi among other things. Probably will not take my camera.
