River Heads, Great Sandy Strait

We spent a lovely morning visiting the town of Maryborough about half an hour inland from Hervey Bay. I managed to cram in some successful shopping as well and then we came back via River Heads about 15mins from the Bay.
It is the gateway to the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island which is a World Heritage Listed National Park and it is here also that the freshwater from the Mary River (which recently caused some major flooding in the area) merges with the salt water of the Great Sandy Strait.
It is an amazingly huge expanse of water and islands and a beautiful place with a small settlement and a few shops. From up on the high part of the peninsular there are spectacular water views of almost 360 degrees. The islands in the foreground to the right are not part of Fraser Is by the way.Fraser Island info
This blip is the barge which takes vehicles and people over to the Kingfisher Resort on Fraser Island leaving from River Heads. Go large and in the distance you might see some of the white sand cliffs on Fraser Island which has the whitest sand I have ever seen. It takes this barge about 50 minutes to get to Fraser but some of the other boats only take 30 minutes.
The Information Board states "The Mary River System pushes past this rocky headland to enter the sea. Silt washed downstream creates a maze of mangrove-lined islands and shifting sand and mudbanks. Surrounding the carpark area a rich rainforest remnant has a least 96 plant species and an amazing 780 species of moths and butterflies. This littoral rainforest once covered much of the peninsular".
In Hervey Bay there is also a huge Marina with lots of other tourists boats and tours which go to Fraser as well, and of course the Whale Watching trips in the winter months.
PS you can see the water is still very muddy from the flooding but previous times we have been here the water has been the most amazing colour - a cross between a deep green and a beautiful turquoise blue if that makes sense.....
