Canada Day, eh?
Whereas most people were heading north to their cottages for the big July 1st Canada Day holiday weekend, I was heading home from ours, going back to the city...where photo-ops are harder to find. So, one last snap of our back bay before heading home would have to be my blip of the day.. another sunrise a step away from my door...another memory to take back to the city.
Canada Day is usually a big patriotic holiday full of fun, fireworks, flag waving, and everything red and white - table cloths, aprons, t-shirts.. but this year it was less than celebratory, partly because of the pandemic of course, but also because it is a sad time here right now. With the discovery of even more unmarked graves of native children at residential schools, there was pressure to either cancel or scale back the usual events. Rather than flying proudly, the Canadian flag is flying at half mast up on Parliament Hill today in honour of the victims and survivors of those schools, and the day for many was more a reflection on our shameful past, than a celebration of the country we love; however, whilst I write this, I can hear the sound of fireworks exploding all round the neighbourhood... so there are still some celebrations going on out there!
In the words of our Prime Minister..."While we cannot change the past, we must be resolute in confronting the truths in order to chart a new and better path forward. We have a long way to go to make things right with Indigenous Peoples"
We can be a better Canada... one to truly celebrate.
