Before the days of 'elf 'n safety'.......

.....firemen apparently made a habit of building temporary structures out of any old scaffolding poles they found lying around and then showing off in a shameless manner.....as far as I can tell from the scraps of caption still sticking to one of the photos, they built this haphazard erection for a demonstration at Tynemouth Flower Show, probably in the 60's......I well remember these displays usually culminated in a 'rescuing a maiden from the top of a burning building'', nail-biting finale.....the 'maiden' being a brawny, hairily-legged fireman in a blonde wig with a couple of balloons stuffed up his (wifes?) Winceyette nightie.........
