Bain Street, Singapore

this street runs adjacent to the Singapore National Library. The street is named after Gilbert Bain a Scot from the Shetland Isles who came to Singapore as a merchant in the early 19th Century.
He was one of the founders of a library in Singapore along with a few other Scots traders.
He made a bit of money but never married. When he retired he lived in Edinburgh and left his money to his sisters who in turn donated the money to the Shetland Islands to found a hospital. The Gilbert Bain Hospital is still in Lerwick thanks to his generosity.
