Not every day

Belt of woodland

These, if I'm not mistaken, are Belted Galloways, a traditional breed of beef cattle adapted to Scottish moorland. These particular ones are in the much more sheltered Hood Brook valley just north of Hathersage, in the Derbyshire White Peak. We walked up to Stanage Edge and back (three people and two dogs, in extra).

I was prompted to dig out the photo by reading this tweet. Lately we have been considering ways to encourage more diversity on our land, in particular by reverting some of the pasture to woodland. I've been encouraged by reading Isabella Tree's book Wilding (yes, that's really her name) to think about ways in which those categories can be broken down a bit. Who knows how bold we will be, in the time we have left to us? Having grandchildren is something of a motivator...
