Sand martins' home
Trip with the Kayaks to Backwater Reservoir today.
It was warm and quite sunny, though a bit hazy to begin with (1st extra). We did an almost complete circuit of the reservoir and got to places you can't get to by land.
There were a lot of sand martins flying around, particularly at one point, and as we carried on a short way we saw why - lots of holes in the sandy cliff. Round the next corner was a sheltered bay but we couldn't go in as we were strongly warned off by a swan protecting his family. It was a bit scary for a moment or two as he headed directly toward me as if about to take off, I started turning away and fortunately he stopped as I couldn't have manoeuvred out of his way in time. Of course I didn't have the camera out!
The paddle was a bit over 5 miles, the furthest for 2 years, but the conditions were such we could dawdle if we wanted.
Lunch eaten and kayaks back on the car we set out, in opposite directions, to see if we could run round the reservoir. I decided after a couple of miles I didn't want to go through a wood as I couldn't quite remember how the route went (and my legs weren't likely to make the 8 miles) so I turned back and Mr Rat also had to do and out-and-back as he couldn't find the paths on the map. Despite that it was good and the wild flowers were magnificent.
The 2nd extra is a view from my run
