Shanklin Chine

Today, we went to Shanklin Chine. We were here last September one evening when it is all lit up. This time, however, I think I more properly appreciated the plants which provide a lovely shade from the sun.

According to their website, Chine is a word used only in the Isle of Wight and Dorset and means a deep narrow ravine with water running down to the sea. Shanklin Chine was properly opened up in 1817 but appears to have become fashionable after Queen Victoria gave a very royal stamp of approval to the Island with Osbourne House.

After appreciating the beauty of the walk to - and from - the waterfall we had a cream tea at the cafe. Again, the weather makes everything better and we sat outside enjoying the scones and cream - and also a jumbo sausage roll - with a pot of tea. It all seemed so tranquil and restful. The walk up the steps to the exit was, perhaps, less restful.
